Infrastructure & Environmental Vulnerability Assessment
Examining the critical systems and services needed to prepare for a changing future.
The communities of St. George and South Thomaston are facing increasing pressure from sea level rise, stronger coastal storms, inland flooding, and aging infrastructure. A new Infrastructure & Environmental Vulnerability Assessment identifies the roads, culverts, waterfront areas, and community assets most at risk—and highlights practical opportunities to strengthen resilience before future damage becomes more costly and disruptive. The report found that nearly half of all parcels in both communities could experience some level of impact from projected sea level rise, while critical roads, evacuation routes, and culverts in vulnerable coastal areas face growing risks from flooding and storm surge.
At the same time, the assessment provides a roadmap for action. By investing in infrastructure improvements, improving emergency access, protecting waterfront connections, and planning ahead for future climate conditions, St. George and South Thomaston can reduce long-term costs, improve public safety, and preserve the working waterfronts and neighborhoods that define life on the peninsula. Community participation will be essential as local leaders, residents, businesses, fishermen, and property owners work together to prioritize projects and build a stronger, safer future for generations to come.
